Homeowners are fighting an invading spider with air guns, fireplace lighters and hornet poison. Scientists say such efforts won’t do much. “You kill one, and there will be 10 times that many ready to take its place.”

ATLANTA—Halloween has come early to Georgia this year—thanks to an invasion of enormous spiders from Asia.

Scientists tracking the Jorōs say such efforts won’t do much: the creatures are here to stay and will spread to other parts of the U.S. Jorō spiders already have been reported in surrounding states. Scientists say the spiders aren’t a significant danger to humans, though they might bite if a person got too close.

Jorō spiders have moved into about 30 of Georgia’s 159 counties as well as northern South Carolina, Mr. Hoebeke says. Credible sightings also have been reported in recent weeks in North Carolina and Tennessee. Bob Wikle, a 62-year-old biotech salesman who lives in Athens, Ga., first noticed Jorōs in his garden about a month ago.He has looked out his second-story window to see Jorō webs 25 feet up in the trees, and the spiders spread webbing across his driveway, he says. At first, he burned webs with a fire starter, “but then I realized it’s a lost cause.”The spiders are just the latest foreign species to settle in the region, which is now home to stink bugs and fire ants.
