Dave Eggers' latest novel is not set in Golden Gate Park, though it might be hard to tell. The award-winning author and longtime San Franciscan spoke to The Examiner about his newest book, which is about a dog. And that dog loves to run.
First and foremost, Dave Eggers would like to assure Bay Area residents that the setting of his newly released novel, “The Eyes and the Impossible,” is not Golden Gate Park.
Johannes, the “Eyes” of the story, watches over the happenings of the park with his animal crew and feels joy most when he is running fast and free. He is not a dog that symbolizes a human. “Crucially,” the book’s opening page reads, he is just a dog, symbolizing a dog. Eggers laments the sometimes arbitrary categories that denote which groups should read what. In a way, it discourages young readers who may feel a stigma if they read below their designated level. It can also alienate great writers.
Ex // Top Stories Hip-hop legends to join LL Cool J for SF show this summer "This is not a moment, it's a movement," wrote LL Cool J in an Instagram post on Tuesday morning “I don't have to check my paper, I don't have to look at and check the numbers,” he said."I was feeling free and writing fast." McSweeney's will roll out a craftsmans's, limited edition copy for the all-ages crowd. Illustrations by Shawn Harris, depicting Johannes dashing through landscapes inspired by old Dutch and Flemish masterworks, variegate the text. The 230-something pages are lined in gold leaf. The cover is carved wood. The colorings look a bit like Golden Gate Park.
