Dallas Morning News EditorialAs voters go to the polls this fall, Texans remain sharply divided on issues and solutions, from immigration to abortion to what should or should not be taught in schools, to false claims that the outcome of the 2020 presidential election is in dispute, and in some instances, the tacit endorsement of violence as a legitimate form of political expression.

But what separates a democracy from other governing systems is the respect given to the process and the good faith involvement of voters who hopefully make informed decisions born of research and efforts to understand the candidate and not just party affiliation. With that in mind, the Editorial Board each election cycle interviews candidates, offers recommendations, and gives candidates opportunities to respond to questions in ourOur desire is to connect voters with candidates and information to help determine whether those who want to be elected are people who are committed to finding solutions to problems that transcend party politics. After the stump speeches fade and votes are counted comes the hard part — governing.

Elections in this nation were never intended to be winner-take-all propositions that absolve the victor of responsibility to the office, the electoral process or to constituents who voted for someone else. The often overused phrase “elections have consequences” is accurate. However, in a civil society this must not be interpreted as a mandate to ignore the rights and concerns of fellow Americans or the voting process.
