The California Ocean Protection Council awarded funds to seven jurisdictions to develop or implement plans to address coastal flooding

Imperial Beach has been awarded $848,000 in state grant funding to advance its comprehensive plan to address sea level rise. The California Ocean Protection Council, or OPC, a body that protects the state’s ocean and coastal ecosystems, approved the money last week. Funds were made available through the Senate Bill 1 Sea Level Rise Adaptation Planning Grant Program, which offers support to coastal communities to build resilience to sea-level rise along the entire coast of California.

“Imperial Beach is taking critical steps to protect its community from the devastating impacts of coastal flooding and pollution,” Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara said in a statement. “By making the most of these funds, we are addressing immediate risks and setting a precedent for innovative insurance solutions and climate resilience financing. This collaborative effort will serve as a model for other communities facing similar challenges.
