Iga Swiatek beats Sofia Kenin in the French Open women’s final, capping the 19-year-old’s run to her first Grand Slam title
The players of the 2020 French Open weathered a barrage of elements unexpected in a major tournament, from cold, rainy weather to changing lockdown restrictions due to the novel coronavirus in the city surrounding Roland Garros.Through the drama, Iga Swiatek stood steady. The 19-year-old defeated reigning Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin, 6-4, 6-1 in her first Grand Slam final on Saturday to become Poland’s first major tournament champion.
Swiatek, who had never won even a lower-level title on the WTA tour, did so in characteristic fashion, which is to say, she was so calm it was hard to tell she was competing in a Grand Slam final at all.The teenager didn’t lose more than five games in a single set throughout her seven matches at the French Open, making her the first woman since Justin Henin in 2007 to capture the title without dropping a set. She was the lowest-ranked woman to ever reach a final at Roland Garros.
