Already, Iditarod rookie Gregg Vitello's boots are soaked, he almost ran into three buffalo and his dog, Greg, saved the team from a cliff. He's still having fun. “Even when I was almost dying out there I was still having the time of my life,” he said.
As he sat inside the Nikolai School gym on Wednesday around noon, 47-year-old rookie Gregg Vitello had a dilemma: to take his mandatory 24-hour rest early, or head out on the trail in light rain.
Just 260 miles into the race, Vitello has already had plenty of misery going through the challenging section of trail. He encountered overflow, moguls and even three buffalo as he descended a fast downhill. He said he called ‘gee,’ the command for right, a few times to Greg, who eventually pulled the team away from the ledge.Gregg Vitello said his dog, also named Greg but with one g, saved him on the Iditarod trail.
