I grew up in suburban New England in what I’m sure looked like a normal middle-class family. But anyone close to us—friends, neighbors, aunts, uncles, cousins—knew of the behind-the-scenes drama.
One Christmas my dad gave her a really special gift, something she’d always wanted. We were all excited for her reaction, but we never could’ve anticipated what happened next. Convinced that my dad had done this out of some sort of infidelity guilt—he wouldbe unfaithful—she walked to a nearby bridge to throw herself off of it. Feeling powerless, we called the police and they intercepted her before she was able to harm herself.As I got older, my mother became a source of embarrassment.
Neither did Dad. She had kicked him out the week before and the courts had issued some sort of restraining order against him for a reason that—all these years later—still eludes me.
