I Saved Two Kids From a Totally Absent Mother. Now That She’s Died, They’re Turning on Me.

My 11-year-old daughter was recently diagnosed with autism and struggles in social situations. My best friend of more than a decade continues to ignore the diagnosis and to blame me for my daughter’s social struggles. She feels that my daughter is modeling my behavior and that it’s the source of her social strife. I’ve tried to explain that individuals with autism struggle to read social cues and that it’s common for autistic individuals to be inflexible .

Even if she believed that your behavior is the cause of your daughter’s challenges, it sounds like she’s being awfully insensitive about the matter. You shouldn’t have to endure this type of criticism, especially at a stressful time like this. You need to let your friend know that you are uninterested in hearing her theories about how your daughter became autistic and that you will be following the guidance of doctors and other experts instead.
