Dear Care and Feeding: It was all in good fun … but that’s not how the candidates felt.
All you can do is make your intentions known to your family and give them the opportunity to extend themselves back to you. You did what you had to do as a younger person to give yourself the sort of life you wanted, and you succeeded. Unfortunately, there may be family members who resent that. This may not be fair to you, but it isn’t for you to decide how they feel. Let them know that you love them, you’re here for them, and that you’d like to be closer.
You had the presence of mind to take care of yourself from a very young age, and you did. If your family can’t accept that, it’s truly their loss.My husband and I are expecting our first child in December. When we shared the news with family, my mother’s immediate reaction was to say she would fly out to “help.” This is absolutely not acceptable to me. A little background: my mother was verbally abusive to me throughout my childhood and did not intervene against my father’s physical abuse.
