Cavs rookie Jaylon Tyson is eager to prove he belongs in the NBA, showcasing his determination to make an impact this season.
Amid a roster largely unchanged from last season — 13 players are back — Tyson enters a team built on continuity and chemistry. But the 21-year-old doesn’t see himself as an outsider.
Yet Tyson’s journey to this point hasn’t been without motivation. His basketball career has been fueled by an, a list he’s kept since high school, every slight and snub he had felt throughout his basketball career. That list now includes the 19 players taken before him in the draft. Of the 19 players drafted ahead of him, one matchup in particular stood out to Tyson: Dalton Knecht and the Los Angeles Lakers.
Tyson’s confidence extends beyond Summer League success. Though he didn’t explicitly say it, his belief that he’s one of the top rookies in his class suggests a much bigger goal could be in his sights — if his playing time with the Cavs allows: Rookie of the Year. But before any accolades come into play, Tyson knows he must carve out a role on a team that struggled to expand its rotation beyond nine players last season.
Tyson is eager to capitalize on that opportunity, and Atkinson knows how hungry Tyson is. When speaking with Tyson’s former college coach, Mark Madsen, head coach at the University of California, Atkinson received a glowing review. Madsen expressed confidence that Tyson would earn his place in the Cavs’ rotation.
