Thorne and the Auburn offense look to improve on inconsistent 2023 season

“I look at it and I see what our play calls were and all that and terminology. It makes me not feel good,” Thorne told reporters Monday.“I don’t want to talk about last year anymore, truthfully,” Freeze said before Auburn ’s first practice of fall camp. “I want it to be on my shoulders that it was my fault.”

Without a full offseason, and a coaching staff that was already brand new, the offense never seemed to gel from the coaching staff down to Thorne and the rest of the players. “I feel really good with where we’re at now, and I feel like I have a really good understanding of what Coach Freeze is trying to do, Coach Nix is trying to do and what Coach Austin sees,” Thorne said.

Auburn signed four freshmen wide receivers and three receivers from the transfer portal, giving Thorne almost an entirely new cast of players to throw to. The additions of players like Cam Coleman, KeAndre Lambert-Smith, Robert Lewis and others add a lot to an offense, but the new receivers aren’t the only pass catchers Thorne will lean on in 2024.

“It’s almost like, ‘what can you learn from last year, and what can you take from the positive last year?’ And I guess it’s, ‘I never threw to the tight end as much I did last year,’” Thorne said. “It’s building a part of my game that I didn’t do before, and so we’ll carry that over to this year.”
