Daughrity’s spur-of-the-moment decision to have the body scan was fortunate, said Dr. Michael Macris, a cardiovascular surgeon at Memorial Hermann who performed the bypass. It’s unusual for a patient to have both coronary artery bypass surgery and stenting in two separate procedures, Macris said, but the fact Daughrity uses a wheelchair made him unique.
“I really wanted the rush on it because of how bad they said the main artery was blocked,” he said. “I’ve had a couple friends die of heart attacks.” “If we can get the same results that are just as durable, and in a less-invasive way, clearly that’s the preferred way of doing it,” Hermann said.
