The National Weather Service in Tampa said if the storm stays on the current track, it will be the worst storm to impact the area in over 100 years.
Hurricane Milton regained strength Tuesday afternoon, upgrading again to a Category 5 hurricane before it is expected to make landfall in the Tampa Bay region Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
On Monday, the National Weather Service in Tampa said if the storm stays on the current track, it will be theIt is the second hurricane to hit the Florida coastline within two weeks. Florida, North Carolina and much of the south are still recovering from the destruction caused by the Category 4 Helene on Sept. 26.
"Hurricane Milton is still a major hurricane. It is no longer a category five, but it potentially could strengthen back to that as it makes its approach to the state of Florida," he said while encouraging residents to brace for "significant impacts." "Now, there is no fuel shortage. Fuel continues to arrive in the state of Florida by port and what we're doing to bring it in on the ground, but lines at gas stations have been long," DeSantis stated. "Gas stations are running out quicker than they otherwise would and so that is causing the state of Florida to help assist with the mission to be able to get fuel to the gas station so that Floridians have access.
