Ian is located 558 miles south of Naples. It is moving to the northwest at 14 mph.
Ian is forecast to enter the southeastern Gulf of Mexico Tuesday, and pass west of the Florida Keys late Tuesday, and approach the west coast of Florida on Wednesday. Ian is likely to have an expanding wind field and will be slowing down as it moves through the Gulf of Mexico. It will have the potential to produce significant wind and storm surge impacts along the west coast of Florida, according to the Hurricane Center.
Rapid strengthening is expected during the next day or so, and Ian is forecast to become a major hurricane tonight when it is near western Cuba. A major hurricane is one in which maximum sustained winds are at least 111 mph, making it a Category 3 storm. Tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area along the Florida West Coast by Tuesday evening.
