The National Hurricane Center will warn those in threatened communities 48 hours before the hurricane hits. A hurricane watch will be issued if hurricane conditions are possible in the upcoming 48 hours. If this occurs, you should begin securing your home. As things progress, a hurricane warning will be issued signaling hurricane conditions are expected within the next 36 hours. If you are faced with a hurricane warning, this is the time to shelter in place or move to a safer location.
If you are evacuating, you should unplug any electronics, including refrigerators if there is a risk of flooding. If you are staying home, make sure you know the safest places.If you are sheltering in place during the storm, you should stay indoors away from any windows or glass fixtures. People should seek safety in a small interior room, according to the Harris County Flood Control District. If your home begins to flood while the electricity is still on, avoid standing water.
