The LA County Coroner’s Office is in the process of investigating the bone’s origin. It was discovered earlier this month along the shoreline of Torrance Beach.

A human femur was discovered earlier this month along the shoreline of RAT Beach, officials say – but where it came from remains a mystery.A Hermosa Beach couple apparently found the femur on Jan. 8 while walking along the shoreline of RAT Beach – short for “right after Torrance – near the 300 block of Paseo Del Mar, in Palos Verdes Estates, said PVE acting Police Chief Luke Hellinga.

But rather than call PVE police, the couple took the bone to their home and then called their local law-enforcement agency, said Hermosa Beach Police Department spokesperson Matthew Franco. But once HBPD had the bone, there it stayed – until officials could verify that it was human. HBPD contacted the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, and sent them photos and measurements, Franco said. The coroner’s office confirmed the bone was a human femur.“It was taken to the coroner’s office,” Hellinga said. “We haven’t received any information on how old it was.”That’s because initially, Franco said, there was a discrepancy over where the bone was actually found.

“We called the residents who verified that at what would be RAT Beach, south of Torrance’s last lifeguard tower,” Franco said, “which put it in PVE jurisdiction.”
