⚠️ A pharmaceutical supplier has warned that the situation with HRT supply could worsen because the Government has “lost momentum” in tackling the problem 🔴 Exclusive luciemheath and ChaplainChloe
Women in the UK are struggling to access hormone replacement therapy again after a breakdown in communication between the Government and manufacturers, a major supplier of the medication has warned.
Sajid Javid, who was the health secretary during last year’s shortages, set up a HRT taskforce in April 2022, which made recommendations to the Government on how to alleviate the pressures on supply. Labour MP Carolyn Harris, who co-chairs the menopause taskforce, claimed the Government has not convened a meeting with the group since Boris Johnson was prime minister.
Ms Rimmer said she has mostly heard of women struggling to access progestogen, which most women take alongside oestrogen when they are prescribed HRT. Ms Rimmer is on HRT herself and currently has six weeks left of her prescription but is about to request her next set of medication in the hope of getting it in time.
“These women are so scared of going back to what they experienced before, those symptoms where they felt like they were totally out of control,” she said. “Most women are panicking that they will have all the symptoms come back.” She said: “You can’t meet with manufacturers for one hour every quarter and expect change. There’s got to be things in between where we’re working on things together to make sure this doesn’t happen again but there’s none of that.”
“It’s very hard to do accurate forecasting because we don’t know when other products are out of stock until we get an email from the Department of Health saying can you cover this,” she added. “A national formulary would make a massive difference,” she said, adding that there are many newer HRT products that are not in short supply.
Supply has not been able to keep pace with demand. HRT suppliers say better communication with the Government is needed to help them scale up, while other issues including Covid and supply chain issues have also been cited as reasons for shortages.
