The most amazing part: They’ve never even met in real life!

Miller and her mom, Jan, at an in-person race before discovering the Charge running app.allows you to join daily runs, walks, or walk-runs led by trainers and coaches; there’s also a chat function, where exercisers can send words of encouragement or share “I did it!” selfies.

For instance, ask Miller for a fun fact about Boustead and she’ll immediately tell you about her love for Harry Potter , and her affinity for any race with a theme; she knows her long distance friend’s favorite local food market, her regular sandwich order, and how proud she is of her dancer daughter. On the other hand, Boustead will happily tell you about Miller’s love of Broadway and the joy she gets from being a teacher and keeping the classroom snack cupboard fully stocked for her students.

But it hasn’t always been all fun and games. This dynamic duo has lifted each other up through some pretty tough times. There was COVID stress, of course. But Miller also helped Boustead get through her father-in-law’s unexpected death in a freak farming accident, and she was there for her when Boustead was navigating an injury. Meanwhile, Boustead continues to support Miller through some difficult health issues.

The pandemic foiled their first attempt at an in-person meeting , but the friends are hopeful that this will be the year that they finally get to walk together side-by-side, and squeeze each other tight. Until then, they’ll continue to walk and bond through the app. “If you would have told me that I’d develop such a deep friendship this way, I would have laughed at you,” says Boustead. “I never would have imagined it, but it’s been the best thing ever.
