From a NASA open house to science activities on the National Mall, here’s how to make the most of the solar eclipse.
The Washington area won’t be in the path of totality during the April 8 solar eclipse — only about 87 percent of the sun will be covered by the moon, depending on where you’re located. But it’s still a striking event, and one that won’t repeat in the contiguous United States until 2044. Whether you’re a seasoned sky watcher or just want your kids to experience an eclipse, there are viewing parties across the region, helmed by NASA scientists and enthusiastic amateurs.
The eclipse will last from 2:04 to 4:33 p.m., with the peak occurring at 3:20 p.m. Remember that you should not look at the sun without safety glasses. The biggest celebration takes place on the National Mall, where the National Air and Space Museum is joined by scientific organizations including NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for a free, family-friendly afternoon festival.
