“There is an increase in testosterone in the body. It attaches to the androgen receptors and produces DHT , which is what makes hair follicles miniaturize,” explains Helen Reavey, a trichologist and founder of scalp-care brand. “So if you have a five-year hair cycle, this can slow down to a year, then a month, and then all of a sudden it’s a week, and hair may be falling out constantly.”

Menopause can already be a difficult time, but when hair starts to fall out, there is often a huge emotional cost. So, what does Reavey recommend to treat it? “You need to wash your hair every day,” she says. “Most people think to do the opposite, but because DHT is produced more when you sweat or wherever there is sebum, cleaning out the excess regularly is key.”
