With the many layoffs occurring throughout the country, it’s easy to feel a loss of identity. Here are three ways to cope with having to rebrand yourself.
... [+]Today’s society is enamored with titles and roles versus who people are as individuals. It is easy to associate one’s self-worth with a career track, title, or position in a company rather than a person’s contribution to the community and at home.
When speaking of self-confidence in the context of pivoting, it is vital to acknowledge the idea of identity loss. Do you ever stop to think about who you would be if you didn’t have your job title or company’s branding to support your credibility? Part of what keeps people from switching careers is their fear of who they would no longer be. Not titles like a doctor or two-time champion; those titles you have for a lifetime.
To successfully pivot, you must be willing to let go of the security net and who you used to be to start creating a new picture of who you want to be and accomplish in this lifetime. Once you figure that out, find a title to match your core values. It’s easier said than done. There might be stints of confusion or depression and periods of expanding your comfort zone. However, keeping your focus on the future instead of the past will help make the creation of a new identity easier. You can always have another title and build upon the reputation you’ve already developed for yourself in a new industry or company.
Many people overthink their identity or an attachment to a title and find themselves in a downward spiral. The number one mistake people make when rebranding after pivoting is not rebranding their narrative. Instead, when meeting new people or writing a bio, they lead with who they were in the past, especially if they had a high-ranking title at a popular brand.
