Cowboy Bebop is considered one of the greatest anime of all time, but the series only came to be thanks to a variety of coincidences that opened up the opportunity for series creator Shinichiro Watanabe to make the kind of show he wanted. One key event might surprise fans, however, and that event happens to have been the release of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace.
Cowboy Bebop and Star Wars really couldn't be more different, despite both stories being set in space and featuring spaceships, so it might be hard to imagine how the two could ever be connected. However, that simple commonality really was the driving force behind Bebop's creation. In other words, Bandai was hoping to cash in on Star Wars' success by having its own space-based property, and so long as it had ships they could sell toys of, anything else was fair game. Of course, Cowboy Bebop isn't the kind of show that would be popular with children, and that ultimately came back to bite Watanabe, when Bandai pulled out as a sponsor of the show, realizing it wouldn't sell toys like they wanted.
