Get ready for a far different world than the only other time the All-Star Game came to Arlington in 1995.

The stadium that hosted the 1995 game will now host the bulk of the accompanying four-day fan fest that precedes the game. Now it has become the fair, bigger than the globe itself. The Major League Baseball event: It’s not just a game, it’s a jubilee. Over the next 10 days, ahead of the 94th All-Star Game at Globe Life Field in Arlington, MLB will set up camp for the largest footprint a sporting event has ever left in the City of Stadiums. This is not your parents’ All-Star Game.

It’s fair to say more people, especially locals, are expected to plunk down the $35 admission to enter All-Star Village than will attend the actual All-Star Game. A year ago, All-Star Village really came to life in Seattle when MLB took over Lumen Field, the home of the NFL’s Seahawks, for the festival. This year’s footprint dwarfs it. It includes all the accouterments of a fan fest on steroids. Oops. Maybe that’s a poor analogy given the sport. But you get the point.

The revenue may be the only similarity the All-Star Game has with its ancestor from 91 years ago. At the time, with the country in the throes of the Great Depression, baseball attendance was sharply down. As a way of reviving interest and in conjunction with the 1933 World’s Fair,Sports Editor Arch Ward proposed the idea and sold it as a one-off affair, a “Game of the Century,” pitting the best from the American League against the best of the National League.

The game only grew. For several years in the late 1950s and ‘60s there were two All-Star Games played each year. Over the past 30 years, MLB has almost annually added some new wrinkle to the production, making it bigger and bigger., an All-Star Game of players from historically black colleges and universities. It was an idea that sprung from the mind of Ken Griffey Jr. last year.
