R2-D2 and R5-D4, in contrast, are astromechs - designed to interact with a ship's systems, slotting into place in starfighters like x-wings. Astromechs are typically equipped with engineering tools to action repairs, ranging from electric tools to welding torches. Many droids fail to develop personalities because of constant memory wipes, but astromechs seem to undergo these less often.
