Hockey nicknames are not usually as evocative as Hammer (Niklas Hjalmarsson) or The Great One (Wayne Gretzky), or Grapes (Don Cherry)
Surveying a list of nicknames maintained by Wikipedia, Okon explained in an interview how these constrained operations amount to an algorithm for a hockey nickname generator. It starts with “truncation,” proceeds through “resyllabification,” and ends with the application of one of just a handful of possible endings: “s,” “z,” “see,” “zee,” “o,” “ee,” “er.”
Then, there is sometimes a realignment of the syllables. So instead of Dupuis being truncated to the first syllable “doo,” it borrows the first sound of the second syllable and adds the “er” suffix to become “Duper.” Similarly, Lucic becomes “Looch,” rather than, say, “Loo-ee,” and Bozak becomes “Bozie,” rather than, say, “Bo-ee.”
It prompted some reflection and a paper on the naming conventions of heavy metal bands, from the seminal Black Sabbath, with its connotations of otherworldly evil magic and anti-Christian blasphemy, through to one of the all-time great parodies, Spinal Tap, with its medical connotations, similar to Sinsaenum.
Iron Maiden, for example, is named for a medieval torture device, and its best known album is named for Biblical mythology about The Number of the Beast, an apocalyptic idea from the book of Revelation. Emrah Yesil, a graduate student in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies at York University, is from Turkey but lived for eight years in Beijing, and got to know the restaurants. So discovering Toronto’s main Chinatown “was like encountering an old friend in a new city,” Yesil said.
