You might be surprised to learn that 'Grey's Anatomy' and recipes were on the Brazilian gymnast's mind on the eve of her gold medal winning routine in the Olympics floor event.
Gymnast Rebeca Andrade of Brazil wins her first gold medal in Paris. Paying homage are silver medalist Simone Biles and bronze medalist Jordan Chiles of the United States.
And rightly so. In an event dominated by U.S. gymnasts — the only ones to win gold since 2012 — Andrade took the top medal. She was moved to tears as the Brazilian anthem played for the first time on a gymnastics podium in Paris.Brazil’s “golden girl” had previously won one gold medal on vault in Tokyo, where then-favorite Biles withdrew from the competition. Brazilian commentators are saying this gold is extra special as it proves that Andrade can win gold even when Biles is competing.
Andrade’s natural talent was noticed right away. After her impressive tryout, she earned the nickname “Daianinha” or “mini Daiane” — a reference to, a famous Brazilian gymnast who was the first Black woman and first South American to win a gymnastics medal in the 2003 World Championships.Rebeca’s mother, who worked as a maid, couldn’t always afford to pay for her daughter’s bus ticket to the gym.
Vidor says that most of the high-achieving gymnasts she has trained in the last 40+ years have been from low-income backgrounds. “Gymnastics is very tough. You don’t get holidays, you train on Saturdays, you have little vacation time. So, people in Brazil with a lot of money — they don’t want their kids to do gymnastics. They want to travel on weekends, they want long vacations. This doesn’t work in gymnastics,” said Vidor. “So instead, you get parents who see gymnastics as a way for their kids to have a better life, to travel, to get better education, to have access to better doctors.
