These incidents, combined with her understanding of the limitations of her own memory, motivated Belot, a professor atDepartment of Economics, to study the systemic biases in our memory of people. This is significant because these biases can shape important professional networks that play a role in career advancement.

Belot is the co-author with Marina Schröder, an economics professor at Leibniz University Hannover in Germany, of a recent study published in theThe authors believe they are the first to provide evidence of bias in our ability to remember professionally relevant information about people, which could contribute to discrimination.

The results showed that female presenters were much more likely than male presenters – by 14 percentage points – to be correctly matched to a photo, but study participants couldn’t remember their names or institutions any better. The results confirmed those from the field. Women were remembered better if they were a minority, but not if the choices included multiple women. Women and nonwhite people were more likely to be confused with others of the same gender or race, particularly when there were more to choose from.
