How big companies are contending with a frenzy of demand for Ozempic from their workers
The topic is at the front of employers' minds, said Robert Andrews, the CEO of the Health Transformation Alliance, a coalition of about 60 major US companies that provide health coverage to 5 million people. Some of the companies are American Express, Caterpillar, Marriott, and Verizon.
Andrews estimated that more than half the companies in the alliance covered weight-loss drugs. But he said a significant percentage still regarded weight loss as a lifestyle problem and didn't believe the drugs were medically necessary. The employers share their health-claims data so they can make better decisions about where to steer their workers for care. The alliance has also started working with Merative, formerly IBM Watson Health, to crunch the price data thatso employers can see what they pay for certain procedures relative to other health plans and perhaps negotiate better rates, Andrews said.
Employers see potential for the drugs to help address some of the health conditions that drive 40% of their spending, including heart conditions, diabetes, and musculoskeletal procedures such as knee and hip replacements — all of which are associated with weight, he said.
