Astros officially announce one-year, incentive-laden contract with Michael Brantley for...
Karen Warren/Staff photographerBrantley played in 64 games last season before undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery. He logged just 277 plate appearances while adding another chapter to his extensive injury history. Brantley had a similar shoulder surgery in Aug. 2016 while with Cleveland. He's missed time with hamstring and knee problems in Houston, too.
The Astros structured Brantley's latest contract accordingly. Houston will pay the 35-year-old outfielder a $12 million base salary, but Brantley can make an additional $4 million if he takes 525 plate appearances in 2023. Brantley hasn't taken more than 508 plate appearances in either of his past two 162-game seasons.
A person with knowledge of Brantley's contract structure said he will receive $500,000 for reaching 400 plate appearances and another $500,000 after reaching 425. Brantley will make $750,000 if he reaches each of 450, 475, 500 or 525 plate appearances. For reference, Brantley took 508 plate appearances in 2021 and hasn't eclipsed 525 since 2019. Brantley and Yordan Alvarez are expected to split time between left field and designated hitter next season.
