A war injury cost artist Jesse Treviño his right hand — but sparked his genius
Alma E. Hernandez /Alma E. Hernandez / For the San Antonio Express NewsHis legacy is all the more remarkable in light of what he had to overcome as a budding artist: the loss of his right hand.Treviño was born in Monterrey, Mexico, and moved to San Antonio with his family when he was 4 years old. He grew up in the Prospect Hill neighborhood on the near West Side, one of 12 siblings. He was 6 when his drawing of a pair of doves won a student art competition sponsored by the Witte Museum.
In a 2009 interview with the Express-News, he talked about the thoughts that went through his mind as he lay bleeding in a rice paddy. Treviño went through 16 hours of surgery in a field hospital, followed by more operations at an Army hospital in Japan and at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. He was discharged from the Army in 1968. Two years later, he enrolled in an art class at San Antonio College and began learning to draw with his left hand.
