Astros' rookie stayed calm in rain delay with a poker-esque game of 'Montana' then...

Houston Astros starting pitcher J.P. France throws during the first inning of a baseball game against the Houston Astros, Friday, May 12, 2023, in Chicago.CHICAGO — The scheduled 7:10 p.m. first pitch time for Friday’s Astros-White Sox opener came and went as rain continued to fall onto the tarp covering the infield at Guaranteed Rate Field. Inside the visiting clubhouse, Houston’s starting pitcher for that night was getting his butt kicked at a cards table.

His premonition proved accurate. The rain cleared and France dealt 6⅔ innings of one-run ball in the Astros’ 5-1 victory to earn his first major-league win. He then returned to the clubhouse and was soaked in a congratulatory shower of beer, ketchup and whatever else his jubilant teammates had at their disposal.

France’s call-up was the result of multiple injuries that left Houston’s rotation shorthanded. His composure and execution thus far have saved the bullpen and eased some of the worry.
