Link Road in the Houston neighborhood of Independence Heights has"Black Towns Matter" painted on it in preparation for the community's Juneteenth celebration on Friday, June 19, 2020., the first incorporated African American municipality in Texas, recently received a grant to help create a conservancy nearly a century after it was annexed by the City of Houston.

To date, historic preservation and revitalization activities for Independence Heights are coordinated by the Independence Heights Redevelopment Council, neighborhood groups,Executive Director of the Independence Heights Redevelopment Council Tonya Debose said the conservancy is long overdue and the grant will be used to set up the conservancy and hire its first executive director.
