Sasser scored 24 of his game-high 30 points in the second half to lead the top-ranked Cougars to a 60-46 victory over East Carolina in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference men’s basketball tournament at Dickies Arena.The Cougars improved to 30-2 overall, the sixth 30-win season in program history.
After clinging to a 23-21 halftime lead, the Cougars pulled away with a 16-3 run to begin the second half. Sasser, the school’s career 3-point leader, added four more Friday, including back-to-back shots during a tightly contested first half.The Cougars showed why they are considered a lock for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, taking a 14-point lead, 43-29 with 11:49 left.
Jamal Shead added 12 points for UH, which shot 28.1 percent for the game. No other UH player was in double figures. J'Wan Roberts had 10 rebounds.
