A Houston police dog died Monday after being left in a turned-off police vehicle, according to the Houston Police Department. The police said that fail-safes meant to keep the vehicle running and cool while the dog was unattended did not work properly.
, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association.HPD said it was"a necessary and common practice" for dogs to be left in a vehicle when they are"not actively engaged in police work."
It's unclear why the engine on the police vehicle turned off. The department said it planned to inspect all vehicles that transport dogs to make sure they are working properly. Aron's death was not the first time a Houston-area police dog has died after being left in a hot vehicle. In August 2013, a Harris County Sheriff's Office dog died after it was accidentally left in a vehicle after its handler returned home from a shift. That deputy was placed on administrative leave after the dog's death, but it's unclear if he faced any discipline from the incident.
