The former Alamo Heights star was Houston's first-round pick in 2016 and will be in the majors for the first time in his career.
Forrest Whitley ’s time has arrived. The Astros are calling up the right-hander, a person with knowledge of the move confirmed Tuesday, completing a long road to the majors for the former Alamo Heights star once deemed baseball’s top pitching prospect. Whitley, 26, will join a well-worked Astros bullpen. After starting his season on the minor-league injured list, Whitley has made three one-inning relief outings at Triple-A Sugar Land . He last pitched Saturday.
He entered 2019 ranked as baseball’s top pitching prospect but threw just 129 ⅔ innings with a 7.01 ERA over the next four minor-league seasons. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2021. Last season, Whitley started at Triple-A and posted a 5.70 ERA in eight appearances before suffering a lat strain that ended his season. The Astros obtained a fourth minor-league option year for Whitley this offseason with plans to have him compete for a bullpen job in spring training.
