The city of Houston on Wednesday announced plans to use city facilities, including libraries and community centers, as shelters for people seeking relief from triple-digit temperatures over the next five days.

Sean Skinner adds a fresh bag of ice to be used for snow balls at Montgomery Original Snoballs on Tuesday, June 13, 2023 in Montgomery.

The measure came after the city activated its public health heat emergency plan. The plan is implemented when forecasts call for the local heat index to reach at least 108 degrees on back-to-back days. Forecasts from the National Weather Service in League City predicted that temperatures in Houston will be that high through at least Monday."We all know Houston sometimes can be uncomfortably hot in the summer," Mayor Sylvester Turner said in a statement.

Houston libraries and other facilities with air conditioning will be open during their normal hours through Saturday, according to the city. Houston Parks and Recreation Department buildings will also be open to the general public"after the conclusion of daily programming for enrolled participants." 🌡️🥵 DANGEROUS heat is forecast across the south-central US through this weekend. High temps are forecast to exceed 💯 each day with heat indices as high as 110-120°-NEVER leave kids or pets in the car
