Republicans hope the move jump starts negotiations with President Joe Biden, who has insisted the nation’s debt limit be lifted without conditions.
Rep. Beth Van Duyne, R-Irving, said Republicans have to push for budget cuts because Democrats have ignored GOP warnings about the national debt.
The deadline to raise the debt ceiling is something of a moving target due to fluctuations in federal revenues and outlays, but it’s expected to arrive early this summer. “President Biden will never force middle class and working families to bear the burden of tax cuts for the wealthiest, as this bill does,” Jean-Pierre said. “The President has made clear this bill has no chance of becoming law.”
The bill puts a cap on future spending, but instead of cutting popular programs lawmakers could target other items from “slush funds” intended to fight climate change to earmarks like a trail named for former first lady Michelle Obama, Arrington said. During Wednesday’s floor debate Democrats quoted former President Donald Trump warning that the debt ceiling is too serious to be used as leverage, while Republicans highlighted Biden’s past willingness to negotiate over terms of debt ceiling increases.
