A horse participating in the recent rodeo at Petco Park in San Diego has died, prompting an investigation by the San Diego Humane Society. The cause of death is unclear, but the investigation aims to determine if criminal intent or negligence played a role. The rodeo organizers maintain that the death was due to an unforeseen medical event and emphasize their commitment to animal welfare.
The San Diego Humane Society is conducting an investigation into the death of a horse that participated in last month's rodeo at Petco Park . The agency's law enforcement team is nearing the conclusion of their investigation to ascertain if criminal intent or negligence contributed to the death of the 16-year-old horse shortly after a saddle bronc event on January 11th.
While the horse displayed no visible signs of injury during the performance, it began exhibiting tremors approximately 15 minutes afterward, according to the SDHS. Despite prompt responses from an on-site veterinarian and the humane society, the horse collapsed and perished before any treatment could be administered. The San Diego Rodeo Alliance, the organization responsible for running the rodeo, stated that the death resulted from an unforeseen medical incident. 'The San Diego Rodeo has comprehensive measures in place to ensure animal safety and well-being, including pre- and post-event health screenings and constant veterinary oversight. Regrettably, a 16-year-old horse that was present at the rodeo passed away due to an unforeseeable medical event. The owner was made aware, and the horse was transported to a nearby facility for evaluation. As we follow our own, thorough and internal protocols for evaluating each event, we remain dedicated to upholding the highest standards of animal care and welfare,' spokesperson Jed Pugsley stated. This year's fatality occurs amidst ongoing disputes between animal activists and rodeo organizers and proponents, who argue that these events are integral to long-standing cultural traditions. The debate centers around whether to impose restrictions or completely ban rodeo competitions. Last year, attempts by City Councilmember Kent Lee to prohibit the rodeo or implement limitations on such events within the city were unsuccessful. The San Diego Humane Society expressed 'deep disappointment' to NBC 7 last year regarding Petco Park's plans to host a second rodeo
