The ancient hominids buried their dead and carved designs in underground caves, controversial new reports conclude.In 2018, Berger’s team excavated what they consider the skeletal remains of an adultwhose body was placed in a shallow pit that was dug in the Dinaledi Chamber, a cave space in the Rising Star Cave System wherefossils have previously been found.
But the underground cave engravings remain undated. There is no way to know whether people reached the cave chambers within the past few thousand years and carved those wall patterns, Pettitt says.
