Here are some boat safety tips to keep in mind as we head into Memorial Day weekend.

AUSTIN, Texas — This heat spell has given us an early taste of the summer season. Before you hit the waters with your friends and family, local officials and boat experts want you to remember one thing: safety first.

“Boat sales have gone through the roof. They are up. Everybody is buying boats. A lot more traffic on the water, a lot of new boaters on the water, and that’s why you need to pay attention and have your boat maintained and have all your safety equipment on boat,” said Hamilton Bradshaw, owner of“The throw cushion you need, so if somebody is in trouble in the water, you can throw it to them and it’s a flotation device. A horn, so you can alarm and alert other boats if you’re in each other’s way.

“You come out here and you’re not staying hydrated, and you choose to drink beer or an alcoholic beverage versus water and hydrating your body. You could suffer cramps that could cause you to go under. You’re going to fatigue a lot faster. Panic sets in, and if you don’t have that proper flotation device, ultimately it could cost you your life and drown,” said Kessler.
