Milton could make landfall along Florida’s West Coast as a major hurricane.
) - Hurricane Milton continues in its rapid intensification and now is a historically strong hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico. As of 7 p.m., the winds were sustained at 180 mph and the barometric pressure dropped to a very low reading of 897 millibars. Milton will continue to be an extremely strong hurricane through the night and into tomorrow, possibly making landfall along Florida’s West Coast as a major hurricane.
Storm surge values could be as high as 15 feet. The storm surge will likely be very high even if the winds weaken some prior to landfall. The official forecast has Milton as a Category Three storm on Wednesday night. The system is rather small in size, for now. We do expect the wind field to grow and expand as it approaches Florida.
Locally, our impacts will be relatively minor. We do anticipate to have a high rip current danger along our beaches through Thursday. We don’t expect any rain here locally. A surface front should be tracking through the area this evening which will bring drier, cooler air to the Gulf Coast. Temperatures for highs will be in the low to mid-80s with lows in the upper 50s and lower 60s through the end of the week.Copyright 2024 WALA. All rights reserved.
