“It should be crystal clear to anyone paying attention that the appointment of these unelected bureaucrats to take over our schools isn’t about performance, it’s about politics,” Hany Khalil, executive director of the Texas Gulf Coast Area Labor Federation and chair of NEW Houston, said in a statement.

Critics of the takeover were “dismayed” Thursday morning at the long-anticipated announcement of an appointed superintendent, former Dallas ISD leader Mike Miles, and board of managers to replace the democratically elected trustees. The union said they were weren't allowed access to HISD headquarters at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center, and noted that the Texas Education Agency denied having made an appointment despite monthslong rumors of Miles’ selection.
