Former Greylock VC Sarah Guo is betting her career on the AI boom with new fund Conviction. Here's why.

Ex-Greylock GP Sarah Guo surprised the tech world when she launched her AI fund Conviction last year.Guo chatted with Insider about her approach to investing, community-building, and education.

Kovalsky knew of only one person who could be behind this — Sarah Guo, then a general partner at VC firm Greylock. That night, Guo took the two cofounders out for dinner, where the menu was chock-full of the startup's inside jokes, which Guo had collected from countless chats with employees."It showed us that she had taken the time to truly understand our company and viewpoint," Kovalsky said.

The investor grew up in Wisconsin engrossed in her parents' startup Casa Systems, a provider of software and tech for wireless, cable, and fixed networks, evenHer"abnormal" adolescence formed her perspective on founders and startups, giving her"the deepest respect for the courage and resilience required to build an enduring company," she wrote.

From a business perspective, as she began to dig into consumer internet companies, Guo realized how crucial machine learning was to their top lines, from search engine recommendations to Uber and Lyft's pricing models. And personally, her friendship with Andrew Ng, the cofounder and head of Google Brain, convinced her that the"deep learning revolution was coming," she said.

Guo herself admits that she might not be for everyone, but if a founder is looking for a"strategic partner who has a strong point of view on what the enterprise stack of the existing world looks like," she might be their person. In addition to her product focus, Guo also takes a talent and community-first approach to investing. The investor regularly hosts dinners and events for San Francisco's AI community aiming at connecting top founders, engineers, marketers, and product managers in the space.
