How San Antonio's old Santa Rosa School of Nursing lives on in children's hospital tower

The tower honoring the old Santa Rosa School of Nursing features a section of the original facade from the former building, which was built in 1937.So why preserve this bricks-and-mortar slice of history and its saintly namesake? Because no matter how much health care changes in San Antonio, it all started with an intrepid group of nuns who blessed the city with its first major hospital and many of the nurses to serve it.

She considers the tower a testament to the many nurses who once marched through the hospital's doors, some as members of the Army Nurse Corps during World War II. Nursing students found it difficult to travel from the Alamo Heights-area campus to the downtown hospital to do their practicum work. So in 1937, work began on a dedicated nursing school that would train and house students right across from Santa Rosa Hospital on West Travis Street.
