SAN ANTONIO - With another warmer-than-normal summer ahead, senior citizens living without air conditioning face a higher risk of heat-related illnesses. News 4, Jeannette Calle and Carabin Shaw are paying it forward once again, this time to a local non-profit that gives box fans to older adults in need.
What we do is we provide free 20-inch box fans to seniors who are 55 and older or individuals with a disability, to help circumvent heat-related illness during the summer and provide a low-cost means for people to stay cool,” explained Lizzy Perales, VP of Programs, Catholic Charities. “And very sadly enough there were actually two individuals that were found to have passed away. And so, advocacy was done by the city, getting Catholic Charities involved as the social services arm here of our archdiocese to respond to that need, and being called to that need of giving out those free fans so that people don’t pass away,” said Perales.
