Southern California braces for significant rainfall, with heightened concerns about flash flooding in wildfire-affected areas.
Several cities in Southern California are bracing for a significant rainfall event from Wednesday through Friday, with heightened concerns about flash flooding in areas scarred by recent wildfires. The region has experienced a dry start to the winter, and this incoming rain could provide much-needed relief, but it also poses several risks.
National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists have issued a series of weather alerts, including flash flood watches, wind advisories, and flood watches, to warn the public of the potential hazards.According to rainfall predictions shared by the NWS office in Los Angeles, widespread accumulations of 2 to 3 inches of rain are expected from north of Paso Robles to south of Long Beach. Lower elevation areas can anticipate an average rainfall of 1 to 3 inches, while higher elevations are projected to receive 6 to 10 inches, with some mountainous regions potentially experiencing up to 10 inches. The NWS Los Angeles office has emphasized a moderate risk of significant flooding and debris flows, along with a high risk of swift water rescues and urban flooding, particularly on Thursday. In San Diego, the NWS office has issued a warning of a high risk of flooding from 1 p.m. local time on Thursday to 4 a.m. on Friday. The most vulnerable areas include the San Bernardino Mountains, Inland Empire, Riverside Mountains, Santa Ana Mountains, Orange County coast and inland, San Diego County's mountains, valleys, and coast. The office has specifically warned about 'life-threatening debris flows' in and around recent burn scars. Downtown Los Angeles has received only 2.65 inches of rain since October 1st, the start of the water year, falling significantly short of the typical 8.3 inches accumulated by February 11th. Despite the impending storm, the NWS Climate Prediction Center forecasts above-average temperatures and below-average precipitation for Southern California over the next six to ten days
