Disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein pleaded with a New York judge to move his trial date, claiming he is in a 'serious emergency situation' at Rikers Island jail and needs to be released as soon as possible. Weinstein, who maintains his innocence, cited ongoing health issues and the deplorable conditions at Rikers Island as reasons for his request. He also claims he will be returning to Bellevue Hospital 'any day now' due to the jail's conditions.
“I’m in a serious emergency situation, I’m begging for you to move your date,” Weinstein, 72, said to Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Curtis J. Farber on Wednesday, January 29. “I need to get out of this hellhole as quickly as possible.”
“I won’t be there for April,” the disgraced producer said, noting that he’s experiencing a “medieval situation” at the 'hellhole' Rikers Island jail, where he’s currently being held. During his appearance in court on Wednesday, Weinstein claimed that he would be back at Bellevue Hospital “any day now” due to the conditions on Rikers Island.
Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison after being convicted of rape in 2020. His sentencing was overturned in April 2024 by the New York State Court of Appeals, stating that the original trial judge had prejudiced Weinstein with improper ruling.
