Anthony Duran, 36, had moved to Philadelphia where he was helping the homeless and mentally ill. Someone killed him when he returned to Harrisburg.

, police said. He was visiting a friend who lived on Park, according to his wife Janice Duran.

He earned an associate’s degree in behavioral health arts less than two years ago and was providing mental health services through Philadelphia’s Behavioral Health Department, his wife said. He was also a certified drug and alcohol counselor. Janice and Anthony Duran met as children in Harrisburg, and she described him as her “first crush.” The couple reconnected later in life and married five years ago. They shared a blended family of four sons and three grandchildren.

Michael Abreu was best friends with Duran since childhood, and considered him family. Abreu said they were always together when they both lived in Harrisburg and attended one another’s family gatherings.“It was a beautiful thing to see him apply himself and help people,” Abreu said. “We come from the inner city, and he was able to overcome a lot.”A few years ago, Abreu said Duran called him after the pair hadn’t talked in awhile.
