Waterloo, N.Y. — The Seneca County Health Department is advising the region to take precautions as harmful algal bloom are now considered widespread across the Finger Lakes .
Health officials reported the blue-green algae has now been detected in Seneca and Cayuga Lakes. Ontario County officials also reported a record surge inOfficials warn that health effects can occur from ingestion or skin contact with the blooms, such as respiratory irritation, headaches, nausea and vomiting. If you come into contact with the harmful algal blooms or experience symptoms you are encouraged to contact your healthcare provider.
If you see a harmful algal bloom, the department asks that you report it to New York State and the DEC.
