Milton A. Lee wanted to be a minister, but instead earned America 's highest award for heroism in combat. The contradictions of his brief life ran deep. He abhorred violence. It pained him to learn during Army basic training that soldiers were expected to shoot to kill the enemy — 'no wounding,' he wrote with dismay to a friend back home. Yet in his final hours, Lee, 19, led a furious counterattack on a pair of North Vietnam ese positions on April 26, 1968.
Robert Clark said Lee volunteered for jump school, or basic paratrooper training, after going through basic training and advanced individual training. 'I think he was trying to be somebody,' said Clark, now 76, a former commander of the 5th U.S. Army. 'I think he was a very earnest kid who was trying to make something of his life.
